Education in Kerala: Scenario, System and Scope

Kerala is one of the few Indian states to give education a lot of importance. In January 2016, Kerala became the 1st Indian state to achieve 100% primary education through its literacy programme Athulyam. Kerala also topped the Education Development Index (EDI) among 21 major states in India in year 2006-2007. Kerala education gained its boost during the British rule in India by Catholic and Christian missionaries who provided education to all sections of the society especially women without discriminating. 

Schools in Kerala

Schools in Kerala follow the 10+2 pattern. Most of the schools either follow CBSE or ICSE board while the government schools follow the state board. English is the language of instruction though children have to study Malayalam as well. Students in the senior secondary level follow arts, commerce or science streams. Some of the best schools in Kerala include Loyola School, Thiruvananthapuram, Kuriakose Elias English Medium School, Kottayam, St.Thomas Residential School,Thiruvananthapuram, and Chinmaya Vidyala, Thrissur. These schools offer quality education and the students passed out from these schools are placed in good colleges and universities.

Higher Education in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, is one of the state’s major educations hubs of Kerala. It is home to the University of Kerala and several professional education colleges, including 15 engineering colleges, three medical colleges, three Ayurveda colleges, two colleges of homeopathy, six other medical colleges, and several law colleges. 
The most important medical college of the state, Trivandrum Medical College, is one of the finest in the country and is being upgraded to the status of an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). The College of Engineering, Trivandrum is one of the prominent engineering institutions in the state. The Asian School of Business and IIITM-K are two of the other premier management study institutions in the city, both situated inside Technopark. The Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, first of its kind in India, is also situated here and an Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Thiruvananthapuram is also being set up. 

The Cochin University of Science and Technology is also an important university of the state. Some of the other notable institutes of Kochi are the National University of Advanced Legal Studies, Central Institute of Fisheries Nautical and Engineering Training, Central Institute of Fisheries Technology,the National Institute of Oceanography, and the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute. College of Fisheries affiliated to Kerala Agricultural University is situated at Panangad, a suburban area of the city.
