Mahatma Gandhi University
Established on 2nd October 1983, Mahatma Gandhi University has jurisdiction in central Kerala and spread across the districts of Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki and parts of Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha. Along with imparting education, in the conventional disciplines of Science, Social Science and Humanities it also imparts education in professional disciplines like Engineering, Technology, Legal Studies, Pedagogy, Pharmacy and Nursing.
The Institution offers various Undergraduate, Postgraduate, M Phil and Doctoral level programmes through its 17 University Departments, 1 International and Inter University Centre, 7 Inter University Centres, 10 Inter School Centres, 77 Government and aided affiliated Colleges, 10 Autonomous Colleges (of which 8 are Colleges with a Potential for Excellence), 200 Unaided Affiliated Colleges and 199 Recognized Research Centres.

Research in Mahatma Gandhi University
At present Mahatma Gandhi University offers research programmes in forty disciplines through its own Schools as well as through its approved research centres. The University has close collaboration for academic, research and extension programmes with a number of national agencies and institutions. The centres of Mahatma Gandhi University are responsible for research work in their respective disciplines and have produced some acclaimed research papers over the years. Admission in Mahatma Gandhi University
Admission to BA, B.Com, B.Sc and BCA programs is through Centralised Allotment Process (CAP) which is a single admission window for candidates offered by the university. For PG program, candidates are shortlisted on the basis of their qualifying degree merit/ marks scored in the university entrance exam. For certain specializations in MA and M.Sc, candidates are selected on the basis of qualifying degree merit while CAT-MGU is conducted the in case of other specializations. In addition to MA and M.Sc programme, CAT MGU is also conducted for admission to M.Ed and LL.M programme. Admission to BA.LLB (5 years)/ LL.B (3 years) programme is also through MGU-CAT.
University Library
The University Library which started in 1989, currently has a collection of 57,350 books, 2,500 e-books, 2,050 theses and 7,500 bound volumes of journals. The library from its infancy has taken exclusive initiatives to imbibe ICT into the entire gamut of its activities. MGU Library and Information System consists of University Central Library, more than 30 libraries of the departments/schools and 4 Study Centres situated in different campuses.
