SCERT Kerala

The State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Kerala functions as Research and Development (R&D) institute at the state level by providing guidance, support and assistance to the State Education Department in its endeavor to improve the quality of elementary and secondary education and teacher education. To achieve this goal, the SCERT conducts research Studies, develops information systems, curricular policies, and instructional materials and co-ordinates in-service education for teachers at all levels. SCERT is concerned with the academic aspects of school education including formulation of curriculum, preparation of textbooks, teachers' handbooks and teacher training. It advises the Government on policy matters relating to school education.

SCERT Departments

The academic activities and programmes of SCERT are carried out by the various departments / units. SCERT plans and co-ordinates all academic projects and programmes in the state.

SCERT has six departments:

Curriculum, Textbooks and Evaluation (DCTE)
Teacher Education (Pre-Service & IN- Service) and Extension Services
Educational Technology (DET)
Art, Physical, Health and Vocational Education
Non-formal and Continuing Education and Special Projects
Educational Research, Documentation and Dissemination

SCERT Comprehensive Teacher Transformation Programme

Teacher empowerment has got new dimensions in our country owing to the realisation of RTE-2009 particularly in the context of millennium goal of ‘Education for all.’ Quality teachers are the assets of a school. To enhance quality of teachers empowerment programme on novel ideas, transactional modalities and skill development are essential. In order to satisfy these needs a comprehensive teacher empowerment programme for transforming teachers for the new millennium is envisaged. All the teachers of the state from primary to secondary level will be trained for two months in 3 phases

Three phases of Teacher transformation programme are:

Phase I Empowerment Programme on Personality Development and ICT skills.
Phase II Empowerment Programme for effective transaction of the Content and Pedagogical inputs.
Phase III Booster Empowerment Programme focused on solving issues and problems during the implementation stage.

SCERT Nu MATS

This is a program to nurture the mathematical talents of school children and to help them participate in high level tests such as the Mathematical Olympiad. By inculcating the analytical and aesthetical skills inherent in culture of mathematics at an early ages, it is hoped that the students can excel in whatever career they choose in future

Each year, tests at different levels would be conducted for students of class 6 and 74 children would be selected at the state-level. A learning camp of 10 to 15 days duration would be organized for them in April-May. Higher level camps according to the development of the children would also be conducted. These would continue till they complete class 10 (continuous 5 years).

As part of the programme, children would be given assignments and projects and also helped in completing these tasks. Aptitude test The selection at the sub-district level would be based on mathematics quiz, preparation of notes, practical test and problem solving test. The state level selection would be based on a written test emphasizing logical analysis and would consist of questions requiring short answers and questions requiring answers with detailed explanation.

SCERT Library

The Library has a collection of more than 56500 books including nearly 2500 reference books. Mainly intended as a support system for the academics engaged in textbook preparation and educational research the library has books on all subjects with special thrust on education and its allied subjects
